In Nov, I brought my son to get his booster Covid shot. While we were walking into a building, there was another mom and her two kids. The younger one was a bit scared. The mom said, I\u2019d done it so many times, I\u2019m not scared. Your brother is not scared either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Once inside the clinic, there was another girl who was screaming and crying, her dad was trying to calm her down, but she kept screaming. And at the end her dad said, \u201cDon\u2019t hit yourself.\u201d Followed by her response, \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong with me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is one of the damaging effects of dismissing fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When you were growing up, have you ever been told, don\u2019t be scare! Why are you scared? There is nothing to be scared of!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When we keep telling ourselves and our kids that there\u2019s nothing to be scared of, what happens is, when we feel scared, our brains believe that we\u2019re the only one experiencing it!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Others are not scared! Why am I scared? Something must be wrong with me!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n But it gets a bit more complicated than that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When we want to do something and feel scared,\u00a0our brains quickly dismiss the fear but<\/strong>\u00a0our bodies still feel the fear, so\u00a0our bodies hold back from moving forward.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We feel very uncomfortable in this conflict, so our brains will try to get us to do something else to make us feel better<\/p>\n\n\n\n CUE the food searching, social media scrolling, Netflix binging, game playing, email checking, etc.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Then after some time, the critical part of our brains starts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Why aren\u2019t you doing this? You should have done this earlier!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Guilt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You\u2019re such a procrastinator, you don\u2019t have it in you. You\u2019re not cut out for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Shame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Repeat it enough times, and we believe we are the problem..<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dismiss fear, and we get stuck believing that something\u2019s wrong with us..<\/p>\n\n\n\n To undo this.. we\u2019ve got to became aware of the fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Face it. Rather than dismissing it, we teach our brains it\u2019s ok to be scared.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n And that\u2019s what my friend, Phoebe Maina and I will be doing this Friday during our free community hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Giving our bodies a chance to come face to face with fear.
